Dr. Camelia Lawrence is a board-certified surgeon specializing in benign and malignant breast disease. She has fellowship training in advanced breast cancer surgery, including skin and nipple-sparing mastectomy, sentinel node biopsy and oncoplastic techniques.
She is director of breast surgery for the Hospital of Central Connecticut and MidState Medical Center at Hartford HealthCare (HHC).
Q: Why is she a HealthCare Hero?
Dr. Lawrence has a unique ability to bond with her patients with care and attentiveness, going beyond the physical needs of the patient to their emotional well-being. She is also an unrelenting goodwill emissary of HHC through community involvement and representation. In a world which belongs to those who show up, Dr. Lawrence does so on a consistent basis.
Q: How did you contribute to your organization’s COVID-19 response?
I fiercely advocated for continued prioritization of breast cancer screening and timely surgical intervention through direct patient care, public speaking engagements, TV interviews, articles and community presentations while underscoring the importance of COVID-19 vaccinations. I tried to lead by example, championing colleague and patient safety by adhering to best practices in safety.
