Dr. Nathan Nartey joined the Hospital for Special Care in 2016 as an attending internist in the medical rehabilitation unit and has since been promoted to medical director, which handles patients in need of rehabilitation for medical problems such as stroke, spinal cord injury or complex wounds.
Nartey manages patient care to maximize each individual's level of functioning and independence and to ensure delivery of high-quality care. Nartey has rapidly become a physician leader at HSC. He proactively seeks opportunities to streamline care delivery, maximizing operating efficiencies to keep the focus on what the patient needs at the bedside.
What's been the biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
Being made chief resident was a great accomplishment for me. When I was made medical director of the medical rehab unit it was apparent there wasn't team work between the various disciplines. It wasn't easy as people had tried and failed but today the unit is working as a team and patient care has improved significantly.
How are you involved in the community?
I am an elder at the church of Pentecost in Manchester. I'm involved with the church and their community outreach programs. I also volunteered with the Malta Van in Waterbury, giving free care to uninsured patients.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my family, fantasy football, gardening and new found love for fishing.
Give an example of a people-skills habit you adhere to in your work and daily life that you feel has helped you succeed.
I strongly believe in listening to people's opinions, making time for people and people “buying in” to innovative ideas. No matter the opinion, I always listen and do not interrupt. This makes everyone feel that they are an integral part of the team.
What must the Greater Hartford region do to attract more talented young professionals to the area?
There is something about waiting in line to eat at a restaurant with great food. You can attract young professionals with a vibrant social scene having lived in New York and Miami. Having reliable transportation in Greater Hartford will also help attract young professionals like a reliable metro system and dedicated biking lanes.
Four reasons why you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty:
• Named chief resident at St. Mary's Hospital.
• I'm the youngest to be named medical director at Hospital for Special Care.
• I volunteered with the Malta Van in Waterbury giving free care to uninsured patients.
• The first second-year resident to be named on the graduate medical education board at St. Mary's hospital during residency.
Fun Fact
I'm an avid fantasy football player and a two-time champion.
