Who is your favorite superhero? My Mom
Dr. Rebecca Eleck Bruce is the primary care medical director of Wheeler Clinic, a provider of integrated primary and behavioral health care. She oversees the care of thousands of medically underserved patients who come to Wheeler for treatment and leads a whole-person approach to care for all, incorporating behavioral health, addiction services, oral health, nutrition, complementary medicine services, and more.
What’s been your biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
I’ve been a vital part of Wheeler’s transformation over the last decade into a federally qualified community health center and primary care provider. Community health centers care for more than 25 million Americans and my leadership highlights how a fully integrated healthcare system improves care and health outcomes.
How are you involved in the community?
I’m the chair of the Healthy Communities Committee of the Connecticut Community Foundation. I also teach yoga at the Greater Waterbury YMCA and annually volunteer as the medical director for Race for Chase and for the Quassapaug Sailing Center Open Water Swim Festival.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy open water swimming, hiking, trail running, teaching yoga, and spending time with family and friends. I’m especially grateful for my supportive husband and amazing children.
Four reasons why you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty:
• Helps lead a comprehensive major healthcare system providing integrated primary and behavioral healthcare services.
• Tirelessly advocates that for true wellness, the entire patient must be considered and made central to healthcare decisions.
• Ensures that the social determinants of health frame what the words “wellness” and “health” even mean to patients.
• Carries professional passion for whole-person wellness into my personal life through instruction, volunteering and community engagement.
I’m training for my first ultramarathon, a 50-mile run in Daytona.
