An affiliate of South Korea-based fuel cell company Doosan Corp. has laid off 19% of its 300 employees in Connecticut.
HyAxiom Inc., which is headquartered in East Hartford, announced the reduction in hourly and salary positions on Wednesday, a spokeswoman confirmed. The 57 employees who lost their jobs were eligible for a severance package, the company said.
In a statement, HyAxiom CEO Jeff Hyungrak Chung said the layoffs were driven by “adverse global economic situation coupled with impacts to the industry.”
The company’s manufacturing facility in South Windsor will continue to operate, the company said, but will no longer be used for producing molded components. All other areas of production will continue.
HyAxiom has been working to advance its hydrogen fuel cell technology and announced in November 2022 that it was entering the power generation market in China.
Also, HyAxiom manufactured a 460 KW fuel cell for UConn, which was installed at the Depot Campus in Storrs last year.
