With 17 fueling stations in town and one more under construction, East Hartford officials are considering a moratorium of at least 18 months on any new fueling locations.
The proposal will be introduced to the town’s Planning & Zoning Commission during its meeting Wednesday. Members had previously expressed concerns about the number of fueling stations, and their potential environmental and economic development impacts, as it crafted a new 10-year Plan of Conservation and Development, said Steve Hnatuk, East Hartford’s deputy director of development.
“It came up (that) there were already a significant number of gas stations in town,” Hnatuk said. “We felt it was a good opportunity to press pause on new gas station development in order to evaluate the past and future impact they have on the town and make sure that aligns with our long-term goals.”
Hnatuk said town officials want to contemplate ways to promote alternative fuel options, and where the town might want to allow gas stations in the future.
The proposed moratorium would allow for a 12-month extension if that work is not complete by the time the initial 18-month moratorium passes.
