East Hartford seeks $2M grant for Goodwin marina

Jim Michaud | Journal Inquirer Banners introduce the new name for Goodwin College to Goodwin University, Thursday, January 9, 2020, at the campus in East Hartford.

East Hartford is seeking a $2 million state economic development grant for Goodwin University’s planned marina, to be built on the Connecticut River.

Mayor Mike Walsh said the marina is part of a larger project by Goodwin University, encompassing apartments, retail, and potentially a hotel.

“This marina is actually a component of something a little bigger over there,” Walsh said, adding that the hotel may be on hold due to the market not currently supporting it.

Walsh said the town is “Goodwin University’s biggest cheerleader,” and that they are happy to work with the school on its development plans.

“Goodwin University is such a visionary, and to be able to use their space on the waterfront in this manner is wonderful for the south end of our town,” Walsh said.

University officials could not be reached for this story.

In 2020, Goodwin College rebranded itself as Goodwin University, citing a significant increase in the number of master's degrees issued and continuous campus growth.

Goodwin broke ground in October 2020 on an $8 million revitalization project, building a commercial gateway development at the South Main Street campus. Plans call for completion of a three-story, 25,000-square-foot building that will contain an American Eagle Federal Credit Union, office space, restaurants and retail.

In August 2018, Goodwin’s Riverside Magnet School for students in preschool through Grade 5, completed a $9.4 million expansion into the former Willowbrook School, adding 19,000-square-feet to the building.
