Cushman also acts as the leader of Gilbane's national special projects/interiors leadership group.
What's been the biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
Creating our special projects/interiors team in Connecticut has been my greatest accomplishment. The opportunities the group has provided for our team members has been so exciting to watch. After countless successful projects and promotions, three team members entered our management candidate acceleration program.
How are you involved in the community?
I have acted in several roles with the ACE Mentor Program since 2011. I participate in several construction industry groups, including acting as a past leader of the Construction Institute's Young Professionals Group. In April, I joined the board of directors of Riverfront Recapture.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of the office I enjoy spending time with my wife, Megan, and dog, Koa. I like to travel and do outdoor activities including golf and hiking.
Give an example of a people-skills habit you adhere to in your work and daily life.
Being kind and treating people as you want to be treated is a simple recipe for success. Also remembering that 'Good things happen to good people,' if you follow your core values with patience, just trust that you'll succeed.
What must the Greater Hartford region do to attract more talented young professionals to the area?
The state must reform taxes, while maintaining the highest level of public services and creating opportunities for young professionals to begin families. Millennials want more than micro-apartments.
Four reasons why you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty:
• Widely recognized throughout Connecticut as a leader in the construction management industry.
• Is one of the youngest senior project executives in the firm's history.
• Is a volunteer for ACE Mentoring and a new board member for Riverfront Recapture.
• Created a special projects group that has successfully completed nearly $100 million of construction in five years.
