ESPN lands college football playoff rights

Bristol sports broadcaster ESPN has reached a 12-year agreement to air the new college football playoff starting in 2014.

The agreement allows ESPN the exclusive right to broadcast the college football championship game, the semifinals, and any additional bowls in the playoff format on its various networks.

Financial terms were not disclosed. ESPN reached the agreement in principle with the group that will administer the playoff, which includes college football conferences and individual institutions.

ESPN is in the midst of a four-year deal to air the five bowl games in the Bowl Championship Series, which is how major college football currently determines its national champion. The playoff format will begin with the 2014 season, and the first playoff championship game will be played in January 2015.
