An Essex gin company claimed this week it was the first spirits business in the world to accept Bitcoin for a large order from a distributor.

U.K.-based Highclere Castle Spirits, which has its U.S. office in Essex, said it sold 10 cases of its gin to Heritage Wine and Spirits this month for sale into the Kentucky market using the virtual currency.

The transaction was the first payment between supplier and distributor in Bitcoin within the spirits industry, the company said.

Highclere Castle Spirits is named for the iconic English manse used as the setting for TV drama “Downton Abbey,” among other productions.

“Accepting the first transaction in Bitcoin is just another example of Highclere making history,”  Highclere Castle Spirits CEO Adam von Gootkin said in a statement.

Cryptocurrency prices have soared since earlier this month, when Tesla announced it had purchased $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin with company funds.
