The Connecticut Office of State Ethics has opened a comment period on Insurance Commissioner Katherine Wade's oversight of the Cigna/Anthem merger.
The Connecticut Office of State Ethics has commenced a 30-day comment period regarding whether Insurance Commissioner Katharine Wade’s participation in the Cigna/Anthem merger would violate the state’s ethics code. Comments will be accepted until 5 p.m., July 20.
Common Cause of Connecticut sought a declaratory ruling on the issue because it feels Wade’s strong ties to Cigna, including formerly being a vice president overseeing government affairs for all 50 states, including Connecticut, preclude her from making an unbiased ruling on the merger.
Common Cause also wants a ruling from the ethics office if it is allowed for a registered lobbyist to become a state official overseeing the industry they formerly lobbied for. Wade was employed in Cigna’s government affairs operation from 1992 to 2013, according to its filing.
The 30-day comment period is an opportunity for comments (relevant facts, legal arguments, and opinions) from persons interested in this issue. Comments may be sent by email to ose@ct.gov or mailed or otherwise delivered to the Office of State Ethics at 18-20 Trinity Street, 2nd Floor, Hartford, CT 06106.
