Hartford nonprofit Chrysalis Center Inc. and community partners are hosting a second annual Second Chance Employment and Resource Fair Wednesday at the XL Center in downtown Hartford.
The fair runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open only to ex-offenders.
Approximately 40 employers, schools, training centers, and other community resources will be represented at the event, Chrysalis said Tuesday.
Ex-offenders will be able to talk with potential employers and apply for jobs on the spot, as well as learn about education and training to help them increase their skills.
An additional benefit for employers who hire ex-offenders is the availability of federal tax credits of $2,400 given for hiring someone exiting incarceration within the past year, the agency said.
More than 200 ex-offenders attended last year’s event, according to Tanna Howard, Chrysalis’ services director who oversees the agency’s employment services.
Howard said all jobseekers have undergone rehabilitative services in and outside prison. These include trainings focusing on employability skills and job readiness, professional conduct, conflict resolution, and how to obtain and maintain employment, Howard said.
Chrysalis provides employment services for ex-offenders through a contract with the State of Connecticut Department of Correction, serving 300 individuals per year.
In the past year, these services helped 117 participants gain employment, 65 enter adult education, 26 enter college and 57 connect to vocational training, Chrysalis said.
