The Yale School of Medicine Department of Surgery has recruited Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, well-known for his involvement in face transplant surgeries, to serve as its new division chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Pomahac is known as a pioneer in the field, as his team performed the first three full face transplant procedures in the United States. He led the team which performed a full face transplant on Charla Nash, the Connecticut woman who was mauled by a chimpanzee in 2009.
Pomahac is replacing Dr. John Persing, who plans to retire at the end of June following a 29-year tenure.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to lead and learn from such an outstanding team of faculty, trainees, and staff over the years,” Persing said in an announcement. “I look forward to watching the division and department grow to new heights with Dr. Pomahac at the helm."
Pomahac joins the Yale Surgery community via Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School, where he has been the Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Distinguished Chair in Surgery, Director of Vascular Composite Allograft Transplantation program.
Pomahac said he is excited to join the Yale team.
"I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to lead an outstanding Division of Plastic Surgery with so many talented faculty and staff,” Pomahac said. “It is a true honor to follow Dr. Persing, who set a high bar with all his accomplishments.”
