Fairfield University has received a gift of $50 million from alumnus John Charles Meditz, and says it will name its College of Arts and Sciences in honor of the donor.
His gift represents the largest single donation by an individual in the history of the university.
Meditz is the founder and managing director of Horizon Kinetics, a New York-based boutique investment advisory firm.
“Fairfield has always been and continues to be an institution that is guided by and embraces
the liberal arts as the cornerstones of life-long intellectual engagement and discovery,” said
Meditz. “My gift is a reflection of my deep personal belief in the power of a liberal arts
education to inspire and equip students with the tools and experiences they need to become
thoughtful, engaged citizens of our world.”
Meditz graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at Fairfield in 1970, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics, and went on to complete an MBA in finance at Rutgers University.
He has been a member of Fairfield’s Board of Trustees for nearly 30 years.
He previously gave a landmark donation to the university in 2008, which laid the foundation for the Fairfield University Art Museum, along with an additional gift endowing the Frank and Clara Meditz Executive Director Chair, named in honor of his parents.
The College of Arts and Sciences will be named for Meditz on July 1.
