Fairfield University and the Diocese of Bridgeport announced this month that a new campus, “Fairfield Bellarmine,” will open in the fall of 2023 at the site of the shuttered St. Ambrose School in Bridgeport.

The new campus will initially occupy the St. Ambrose rectory and convent. Students who attend can pursue a two-year associate’s degree. It will prepare them for employment or for transitioning to a bachelor’s degree program at a four-year institution.

Fairfield University President Mark R. Nemec said he is grateful to be working with the Diocese of Bridgeport on the Bellarmine initiative.

According to Nemec, it is an “innovative partnership providing greater opportunities and pathways to achievement for students of promise.”

Bishop Frank J. Caggiano said the Bellarmine plan will have a lasting impact on young people’s futures.

“By creating a pathway to higher education, we’re also creating a pathway to hope and achievement for students with untapped promise and potential,” Caggiano said.

The former St. Ambrose facilities will be renovated. It had been a Catholic elementary school before closing in 2013.

Buildings on the Fairfield Bellarmine campus will house instructional, administrative and student-focused spaces. Plans are for classes to be small in size, to allow for students to get a high level of faculty attention and interaction.

The university’s writing and math center staff will have a presence at Bellarmine.

Bellarmine students will plan clubs, athletic and social and faith-related events there, and they will also be able to participate in Fairfield University clubs, activities and sports. They will also have access to facilities on Fairfield University’s main campus in Fairfield.

Fairfield University, a Catholic institution, is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. The Bellarmine program is currently under review for accreditation.
