A self-employed Farmington accountant pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns Thursday after underreporting his business income by more than $1.4 million, authorities said.
Mark Legowski, whose business Legowski & Company Inc. (LCI), waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport.
Authorities say Legowski, 60, lowered his personal income tax liability for the 2015 through 2017 tax years by excluding some customer payment checks from LCI’s computer bookkeeping system.
Legowski then filed false personal income tax returns that resulted in a loss to the IRS of $499,289, according to authorities.
He is set to be sentenced on Nov. 25, and has been released on a $50,000 bond.
Legowski faces a maximum of three years in prison. Also, he has agreed to pay $499,289 in back taxes, as well as penalties and interest.
Legowski prepared income tax returns for 400 to 500 individual clients and 50 to 60 businesses, authorities said.
This investigation is being conducted by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division.
