WellSpark Health, the Farmington-based provider of corporate wellness programs, has been sold to Chicago-based Vitality Group LLC.
New York-based EmblemHealth, which owned WellSpark Health, said the sale was completed on Nov. 14. It did not disclose the sale price.
The sale of WellSpark comes less than three months after EmblemHealth announced an agreement to sell Farmington-based health insurer ConnectiCare to California-based Molina Healthcare Inc. for $350 million. That sale is expected to close in the first half of 2025, the companies said.
ConnectiCare said that, as of June 30, it served approximately 140,000 members in Connecticut.
WellSpark, located at 195 Scott Swamp Road, was formed in 2013 as a subsidiary of ConnectiCare. In April 2023, WellSpark said it was targeting up to a 37.5% increase in annual revenues in 2024 to $20 million to $22 million. It also said it planned to grow its 74-person workforce to over 100 employees by early 2025.
In March 2021, the state announced it would provide WellSpark up to $1.5 million in grants if the company added 287 jobs by 2026.
WellSpark offers customizable worksite wellness programs and a range of services, including lifestyle coaching and education on topics such as how to prevent or control Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases.
Vitality says it’s the world's largest behavioral-change platform, combining technology, data, artificial intelligence, incentives and behavioral science to encourage healthy changes for individuals and organizations.
“WellSpark has brought innovative coaching, personal support, and wellness engagement solutions to members in 30 states,” said Karen Ignagni, CEO of EmblemHealth. She added that selling the company to Vitality “will allow it to continue to grow.”
