Farmington’s Malibu Fitness to close after church buys building for $2.45M

CoStar 15 Executive Drive, Farmington.

Farmington’s Malibu Fitness will host its last day in business on Saturday, as the owners of the 17-year-old gym have sold its 23,144-square-foot building to a church.

Powerhouse Partners LLC sold the multi-tenant commercial building on 3.37 acres at 15 Executive Drive to Legacy Church Inc. The $2.45 million deal was recorded by the town on Dec. 2.

“Farmington was extremely business friendly and a great place to do business,” said Jack H. Banks, one of two principals at Powerhouse Partners. “And we are certainly going to miss so many great people from that area.”

Banks said he and his business partner, Paul Carson, will continue to run their Powerhouse Gym in Berlin, but as both have hit their mid-60s, it was time to start pulling back. The Berlin fitness center is nearly 42 years old, Banks said.

“We had an opportunity to sell the building,” Banks said. “After 41 years, it was a good time to end it.”

Banks said the sale price was less than the cost to build brand new in 2005, but still a fair deal considering rising interest rates.

Legacy Church Inc.’s principals include President Eric Peoples, of Manchester; Secretary Daniel McNamara, of Windsor Locks; and Treasurer Jonathan Clark, of Tolland. It was founded in 2014.

Eric and Melissa Peoples are the lead pastors of Legacy Church, which currently holds Sunday morning services at the Irving A. Robbins Middle School in Farmington. Attempts to reach a Legacy Church representative were not immediately successful Friday morning.

Luke Massirio of O,R&L Commercial brokered the sale for Powerhouse. Legacy Church was represented by Jeff Rothman of EXP Realty.
Massirio said the fitness center is leaving the building to make way for the church.

Banks said he and Carson plan to continue to organize the annual Malibu 5K road race, which has run every year out of the Farmington location since 2005 with WFSB weatherman Scot Haney as master of ceremonies. Proceeds have benefitted a rotating group of charities, including a veteran’s support organization, a food bank and more. Banks said it is not yet certain if the next race will run out of Farmington or Berlin, but it will continue.
