Farmington machine tool manufacturer TRUMPF Inc. says it increased paid parental and family leave for its workers.
TRUMPF, a family owned producer of metal fabrication and industrial laser technology, announced Monday it will offer an additional four weeks of paid parental leave, giving new mothers up to 12 weeks off (paid) to care for a newborn.
New fathers, or same-sex partners, at TRUMPF now have up to four weeks paid leave to care for a new child, the company said. A new family leave policy will also allow employees up to two weeks of paid time off to look after family members with critical health conditions.
“We believe that offering a parental bonding opportunity to all of our eligible employees will help to address their family’s work-life balance within the first year of parenthood,” TRUMPF CEO and President Peter Hoecklin said.
In 2016, 13 percent of private-sector workers had access to paid family leave, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, which said the benefit ranges widely by industry. For example, 10 percent of manufacturing workers had the benefit, while 37 percent of finance and insurance employees had it.
Some Connecticut lawmakers have tried unsuccessfully for the past four years to create a paid family medical leave program. Connecticut has required certain employers to offer paid sick leave since 2011.
During this year’s legislative session, lawmakers passed on the opportunity to vote on House Bill 5044, which would have broadened the paid medical-leave law, creating an employee-funded program for employees who miss work to care for sick family members.
In opposition, business lobbyists argued the bills would raise administrative costs and hurt small business owners who would be forced to raise prices, cut hours or reduce their workforce.
