Revolution Wind has secured the final approval it needed to start building a large-scale offshore wind farm that will serve both Connecticut and Rhode Island.

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has approved Revolution Wind’s Construction and Operations Plan (COP) for the project.

The approval was the final one necessary for Revolution Wind to begin offshore construction, slated to start in 2024. The project, which is being developed by energy companies Ørsted and Eversource, is expected to be operational in 2025.

The project will provide 400 megawatts of power to Rhode Island and 304 megawatts to Connecticut, powering more than 350,000 homes across the two states.

Gov. Ned Lamont called the decision a positive development that brings the state closer to having its first offshore wind farm, which he said will help provide both families and businesses with clean, reliable and affordable power.

“Wind power remains a key part of our clean energy strategy,” Lamont said.

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy said the project is expected to be a “major job creator.”

The COP approval outlines the project’s 1 nautical mile turbine spacing. It also delineates requirements for work done in federal waters and necessary measures to protect marine habitats and species.
