Bloomfield-based Foodshare is providing a hot meal for 15,871 Greater Hartford families this Thanksgiving, according to the agency's president and CEO.
Foodshare CEO James Arena-DeRosa said "generous" friends and neighbors provided the goods, including mostly turkeys and even some chickens from Foodshare's warehouse.
"The mere fact that so many families requested a Thanksgiving meal is a stark reminder of the challenging times we face together; and it is our responsibility to provide what we can for those seeking help," said Arena-DeRosa. "That’s the business we are in, and sometimes that means dipping into our current warehouse inventory."
Thousands of dollars have also been donated to help fight hunger all year long, he said.
"At the end of the day, Thanksgiving is not about a turkey, but it represents something which many of us take for granted…a celebration with our loved ones, complete with food on the table and a warm place to call home," he added. "Whatever the main course, we hope that families will still gather together this Thursday and give thanks for the food we are able to provide, with your help."
