Two Connecticut nonprofits have been named to the 2024 Forbes list of America’s Top 100 Charities.
The Forbes rankings are based on the amount of private contributions received in the most recently reported fiscal year for each charity.
Stamford-based Americares, a disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization, ranked No. 8 with $1.5 billion in private donations.
The organization had total revenue of $1.6 billion and expenses of $1.5 billion, leading to a surplus of $50 million. It listed $361 million in net assets.
The other Connecticut charity in the Forbes 100 is Save the Children Federation, which is based in Fairfield. The organization provides programs in health and nutrition, education and emergency response.
Save the Children ranked No. 46 with $414 million in private donations. It had revenue totalling $975 million and expenses of $1 billion, resulting in a loss of $35 million. It listed net assets of $319 million.
The No. 1 spot went to Chicago-based Feeding America, the nation's leading hunger-relief charity, which received $4.9 billion in private donations.
According to Forbes’ analysis, the nation’s top 100 charities received nearly $64 billion in private donations in their most recently reported fiscal year, a 4% annual increase.
