Former Aetna exec named CFO of CVS Health

Shawn Guertin.

A former Aetna executive who played a key role in the Hartford insurer’s merger with CVS Health three years ago has been named CVS’s next chief financial officer.

In a statement, the Woonsocket, Rhode Island-based healthcare and retail pharmacy conglomerate said Shawn Guertin will start in his new role on May 28, replacing Eva Boratto, who has served as CFO since 2018.

Guertin spent eight years with Aetna, where he held the titles of CFO, executive vice president and chief enterprise risk officer. He was serving as chief financial officer during CVS Health’s $69 billion acquisition of Aetna, which was set into motion in December 2017 and closed nearly a year later, in November 2018.

Guertin left the company in May 2019.

"Shawn is an extraordinary leader with a proven track record of developing financial strategies to help companies drive transformation," said CVS Health President and CEO Karen S. Lynch. "His deep and broad health care experience will be invaluable and I'm confident he will play an integral role as we transform CVS Health to become an even bigger part of consumers' everyday health."

CVS officials said Guertin will report directly to Lynch as a member of the company’s executive team. He will oversee all aspects of CVS Health’s financial strategy and operations, including accounting and financial reporting, investor relations, capital planning and risk management.

Before joining Aetna, Guertin served in a number of leadership positions at Travelers, UnitedHealthcare and Coventry Health Care. He most recently served on the board of directors of two health care and technology companies, DaVita Kidney Care and TriNet.
