Former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin’s historic four-story brownstone in downtown Hartford has hit the real estate market for $1.29 million.
Bronin and his wife, Sara, purchased the home at 93 Elm St. in 2012 and completed an extensive restoration.
The 1863 brownstone, listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, is one of just a handful of the original 19th-century brownstones still standing in downtown Hartford.
Over the years, it has served as a residence, and then an office building. The Bronins converted it back into a single-family home.
The redesign won a Preservation Connecticut Award and the American Institute of Architects’ top honor, the Alice Washburn award.
Bronin, who served as mayor from 2016 to 2024, said he is still living in the brownstone and expects to stay in Hartford once the property sells, but doesn’t have any definite plans yet.
“We love this house and we love living in downtown Hartford,” Bronin said. “We raised our three kids here and we have so many memories here, so we’re feeling really sentimental about putting it up for sale. But we’re at a different stage in life, with a lot of changes for our family, and it just makes sense for us to consider selling.”
The 5,227-square-foot Italianate Victorian brownstone contains five bedrooms and four full bathrooms, and features a secluded, walled courtyard with a garden area. The interior is peppered with historic elements, including exposed brick walls, arches, four working fireplaces and soaring ceilings.
It is the only single-family residence in downtown Hartford, and offers views of the 50-acre Bushnell Park.
“Whoever lives here next will live in a beautiful home downtown, with Bushnell Park as the best front yard in the world,” Bronin said.
Bronin now teaches at his alma mater, Yale Law School, and is widely expected to run for governor if Gov. Ned Lamont decides not to run for a third term.
Luke and Sara Bronin jointly announced in September 2024 that they were planning an amicable divorce.
The real estate listing is held by Ellen Sebastian of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty.
