Michael C. Bingham, a longtime Connecticut journalist who served as editor of New Haven Biz for two years, has died.
Bingham, 68, a Stratford resident, joined New Haven Biz in 2018, and he was at the helm when the publication launched its print edition. In recent months, Bingham continued to write articles for New Haven Biz’s monthly publication. He passed away on Oct. 29.
Bingham’s work garnered awards from the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists. Recently, he won first place for COVID-news reporting in the magazine division for his story, “Opportunity vs. disaster: How COVID-19 strengthened one company, destroyed another.”
"Michael was a dedicated and talented journalist, deeply committed to New Haven and the region," said Peter Stanton, publisher and CEO of New England Business Media, which is the parent company of New Haven Biz. "As one of the founding editors of New Haven Biz he brought an immense local knowledge, and his storytelling skills were extraordinary. Michael was a real artist at his craft, and will be missed."
His love for journalism began while working for Worcester Magazine in Worcester, Mass., according to his obituary. He later moved to New Haven and started the publication Business New Haven, where he was editor and part owner for several years.
Bingham shared his passion for the field with aspiring journalists. He was a journalism professor at both Southern Connecticut State University and Sacred Heart University.
Ronni Rabin, who worked as an advertising professional with Bingham at multiple media outlets, described Bingham as “one of the greatest writers and journalists New Haven ever experienced.”
"For over 30 years when he started Business New Haven with partner Mitchell Young and most recently as the first editor of New Haven Biz, he was devoted to reporting on the business world of the Greater New Haven region,” Rabin said. “He delved into the entrepreneurs’ and CEOs' minds, showed the best of New Haven and made our region shine. He was a preeminent professional -- one of the best in our region. It was a privilege to work with him. He will be missed by many."
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Pistey Funeral Home in Stratford, with a memorial service to be held at a later date at Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven.
