Norwalk Power has sold its former Norwalk Harbor Generating Station to New York City-based real estate investment and development firm Argent Ventures, which plans to repurpose the defunct power plant located along the Connecticut shoreline near the Norwalk Harbor.
Norwalk Power is part of NRG Energy, an energy and home services company. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. The exact redevelopment plan is also uncertain at this time.
The 134-acre South Norwalk site includes a power plant that, before it was retired in 2013, employed hundreds of workers over 60 years.
NRG Senior Vice President of Asset Management Judith Lagano said the deal will allow “this exceptional property to be thoughtfully repurposed,” by an experienced developer who can re-imagine the site.
Argent Ventures has “a comprehensive vision for the site’s reuse that supports open space, resiliency and natural beauty and enhances the quality of life for Norwalk residents,” Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said, and the sale moves the city toward its longstanding goal to redevelop the site.
He didn’t share further details about redevelopment plans.
Local and state officials said they expect the Argent project to preserve Manresa Island’s natural beauty, while ideally incorporating clean energy projects and providing increased opportunities for waterfront access and storm resiliency.
