Former University of Hartford President Walter Harrison has been appointed interim president and CEO of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford.

Harrison succeeds Jacob Schreiber, who resigned from the role.

Harrison retired in June 2017 after serving 19 years at the University of Hartford.

He currently serves as vice chair of the Jewish Community Foundation’s board, but will leave that position to become interim president and CEO.

He also serves as vice chair of the Trinity Health Of New England board, vice chair of Trinity College’s board, and is a member of many Hartford area nonprofit schools.

Before arriving at the University of Hartford, Harrison was vice president of university relations at the University of Michigan. Previously, he was president of Gehrung Associates, a media relations counseling firm for colleges and universities.

Harrison also served on the faculty at Colorado College, Iowa State University and Johannes University in Mainz, Germany.

The Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford is a member of the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy and has close to $170 million in assets. It awarded roughly $4.8 million in grants this past year, it said.
