From BK to Subway: Food chain exec takes reins in Milford

The “king” of double cheeseburgers and chicken fries is trading in his crown to lead the kingdom of classic tuna and cold cut combo sandwiches.

The Milford-based Subway Restaurant chain announced this week that John Chidsey will become its new chief executive officer starting Monday, Nov. 18.

Chidsey previously served as chairman and CEO of Burger King Holdings Inc., and also had roles as the burger chain’s president and chief financial officer.

"I am honored to be joining such an iconic global brand and I am most excited about the future of Subway,” Chidsey said, in a press release announcing his appointment. “I look forward to learning from and working with the many constituents who have built this brand."

The Subway restaurant chain operates in more than 100 countries, and bills itself as the world’s largest fast-food chain. It is known for its sandwiches, wraps and salads and emphasis on providing healthy food that is made to order. According to Subway’s website, there are more than 40,000 Subways around the world. The restaurants are owned and operated by more than 20,000 franchise owners, and it all started about 50 years ago with a humble lone sandwich shop in Bridgeport.

The owners of the privately held Subway brand issued the following prepared statement on Chidsey’s selection:

"We're very pleased to have John join our Subway family,” the statement said. “His diverse business background and global food and beverage expertise will help us continue the evolution of the Subway brand. He will help drive our commitment to always deliver exceptional experiences for our guests and continued support for our franchise owners.”

Trevor Haynes, who has been acting as interim CEO, will remain with Subway, but in the role of president for North America. Haynes had stepped into the role following the retirement of former CEO Suzanne Greco in June 2018.

Chidsey’s career has included several leadership positions in the food-service industry, including with PepsiCo, as well as with car rental and tax preparation businesses.
