Frontier high-rise in downtown Hartford, visible from I-84, to become ‘digital canvas’ for art

A prominent concrete high-rise building in downtown Hartford will get a facelift – albeit temporarily – as it partners with a local nonprofit that will project animated images onto the windowless exterior wall facing Interstate 84.

Frontier Communications has teamed up with RiseUp for Arts, a statewide public art nonprofit, to sponsor “Magic Murals,” a projection-mapping installation that features interactive elements and animated visual narratives.

Frontier’s building at 111 Trumbull St. might appear empty from the outside, but it houses key network functions and infrastructure that provide fiber internet to the region, the company said.

Frontier said the effort is a testament to its commitment to Connecticut since moving its headquarters from Norwalk to Dallas last year. The “digital canvas” will add vibrancy to downtown Hartford “by using innovative technology to transform a building into an art project.”

“There’s more to our downtown Hartford building than meets the eye,” said Mark Nielsen, Frontier’s chief legal and regulatory officer. “The building is at the heart of our work to deliver the fast, reliable connectivity that Hartford needs to compete and lead in the digital economy.”

The “Magic Murals” project creative team includes Emmy Award-winning digital creator, Ryan Glista, and art curator Eric Ben-kiki.

RiseUp for Arts has completed more than 300 mural and placemaking projects throughout Connecticut since 2015. The group plans to make “Magic Murals” a traveling installation, but Hartford will be the first stop.

“Hartford has one of the best arts landscapes for a mid-sized city in America, and this digital mural will bring a vibrant and unique addition to that landscape through cutting-edge technology,” said Mayor Arunan Arulampalam. “Innovative partnerships that bring together local employers and nonprofits strengthen our community, and this collaboration between Frontier Communications and RiseUp for Arts serves our residents in that spirit.”

“Magic Murals” will appear on the Frontier building from Nov. 4 to Nov. 9 and will display artwork by multiple artists.
