FuelCell lands $6.4M federal grant

HBJ Photo / Brad Kane Chip Bottone, CEO of FuelCell Energy Inc. in Danbury, told the crowd at the Fuel Cell Seminar in Uncasville that it's time for the industry to turn its attention to profitability.

Danbury clean manufacturer FuelCell Energy received a $6.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to test a sub-megawatt fuel cell.

The grant, which lasts 18 months, seeks to demonstrate a sub-megawatt fuel cell configured for combined heat and power output and connected to the electric grid in Connecticut.

FuelCell wants to capture more than 60 percent of the heat generated in its chemical-electric process to provide heat for its customers regardless of what fuel they use: natural gas, coal syngas, or biogas.

Separately, FuelCell is preparing to throw the switch on a fuel cell plant on a dairy farm in Sacramento, Calif. that runs on agricultural waste. The U.S. Department of Energy supported the dairy farm fuel cell as well.
