Glastonbury OKs 131-room hotel

Glastonbury’s town council has greenlit plans for a new four-story AC Hotel by Marriott in the last empty property in the Somerset Square development.

The council last week overwhelmingly approved site plans submitted by The Claremont Co. Inc., of Bridgewater, Mass., to build a 131-room hotel with 144 parking spaces and some 3,254 square feet of event space at 75 Glastonbury Blvd.

The planned hotel will sit just south of the Hilton Garden Inn and Hilton Homewood Suites, which is also owned by Claremont.

Claremont submitted three site plan proposals before receiving final town approval last week.

Town officials in recent months, according to meeting minutes, asked the developer to adjust its blueprints to make the proposed hotel better fit the nearly four-decade-old Somerset Square development.

In particular, architects hired by Claremont added more brick to its design, made adjustments to certain textures of the building and added larger windows.

Claremont, which originally proposed building an apartment complex at the site in 2017, acquired the 2.88-acre site in June 2016 for $3 million, town records show.

It’s not yet clear when Claremont will break ground on the development or when the hotel will debut.

Developers have been attempting to build on the vacant Glastonbury Boulevard parcel for more than a decade.

In 2008, PRA Development, the former property owner, received town approval to build a 155-unit apartment complex there, but the plan never moved forward.

Norwalk-based Spinnaker Real Estate Partners, a prominent developer in downtown Hartford, also pitched a similarly designed hotel in 2015.
