Gov. Ned Lamont said Friday he will nominate Nora R. Dannehy of Glastonbury to serve as an associate justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.
The nomination is for the seat previously held by Maria Araújo Kahn, who resigned earlier this year after being confirmed to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Dannehy, 62, is a long-time federal prosecutor and former deputy attorney general of Connecticut. She served as the associate general counsel for global ethics and compliance for United Technologies Corp., from 2013 until 2019, and was second-in-command of the inquiry into how the FBI handled its probe into connections between Russia and the campaign of Donald J. Trump.
A Willimantic native, Dannehy worked for the U.S. Department of Justice from 1991 to 2010, and became the first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Working for the DOJ, she specialized in the prosecution of complex white-collar and public corruption cases, including cases that led to the convictions of former Gov. John Rowland, State Treasurer Paul J. Silvester and New Haven Police Lt. William “Billy” White.
Lamont noted Dannehy’s reputation as “a fighter of corruption and crooked public officials” in announcing her as his choice.
“She has never been intimidated to back down from a fight against those in the highest levels of government, and her work has resulted in groundbreaking reforms in Connecticut that will forever shape how we elect public officials and their requirements for openness and transparency,” Lamont said.
Lamont previously nominated Sandra Slack Glover for the state high court’s vacancy, but she failed to clear the legislature’s Judiciary Committee over concerns about her support of the 2017 nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to a federal appeals court.
Dannehy currently works in private practice at Hartford-based Cowdery, Murphy, Dannehy & Healy, where she conducts internal and independent investigations for public and private entities.
“I am honored and humbled by the governor’s nomination and I recognize the tremendous responsibility this position brings,” Dannehy said. “I appreciate that this is the first step in the process, and if confirmed I will fully and eagerly do everything I can to serve the people of Connecticut to the best of my ability.”
She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and French from Wellesley College, and a JD from Harvard Law School.
