Greater Hartford home sales, prices start 2020 on the rise

Hartford area home/condo sales and prices improved in January, new Realtor data shows.

There were 412 single-family home sales in Greater Hartford last month, up 16 sales, or 4%, compared to Jan. 2019, the Greater Hartford Association of Realtors (GHAR) said Tuesday.

Median price for homes sold in January rose to $239,400, up 14% from $209,880 in the year-ago period, GHAR said.

Condo sales in January also jumped about 14.5% to 95 units from 83 sold a year ago, and their median price fell 1.6%, to $150,000, brokers said.

GHAR CEO Holly Callanan said the sales uptick signals a “strong start” to 2020.

GHAR’s latest data surfaces weeks after it said the region recorded a modest increase in sales for 2019.

Nationally, Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors, said he views 2019 as a “neutral year” for home sales, and that home sellers are well positioned for 2020.

“Low inventory remains a problem, with first-time buyers affected the most,” he said.
