A Groton-based startup that is developing technology for a heavy-duty fuel cell announced a partnership with a major Japanese electronics company Wednesday.

Nimbus Power Systems announced that it has signed a joint development agreement with Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corp. for a “pure hydrogen fuel cell stack” that could be used to power buses and trucks, as well as for stationary uses.

A “pure hydrogen fuel cell stack” uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity with only water vapor as a byproduct. It’s considered an emissions-free alternative to a traditional diesel engine.

Nimbus co-founder and President Michael Gorman said the 3.5-year agreement with Toshiba will allow the companies to scale production in Connecticut and Japan.

“We are excited to accelerate product commercialization in collaboration with Toshiba, a pioneer in fuel cell development, with a proven track record in the stationary market,” Gorman said.

During the 3.5-year agreement, Nimbus expects to increase its workforce, he added.

Nimbus, which recently closed a pre-seed fundraising round led by Connecticut Innovations, is in the final stages of raising $2.5 million to help scale its technology, including research and development.

Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corp. is a subsidiary of Toshiba Corp., the Japanese technology conglomerate.
