G&W's 3Q rail traffic up 6.8 percent

Genesee & Wyoming, the owner of Hartford's Connecticut Southern Railroad, said its third-quarter rail traffic volume was up 30,630 carloads, or 6.8 percent, compared to the same three months last year.

The Darien rail company acquired CSR in 2012 as part of its purchase of RailAmerica Inc.

CSR runs 78 miles through Connecticut and Massachusetts, interchanging with CSX in New Haven and West Springfield, Mass.

The 6.8 percent increase is a pro forma comparison — calculated as if Genesee owned RailAmerica in the third quarter of last year.

In reality, acquisition has nearly doubled Genesee’s rail traffic, it reported. The purchase brought 45 new railroads across the country, including CSR, under its ownership.
