Hands On Hartford

The Liberty Bank Foundation awarded $2,500 to Community Mental Health Affiliates for the agency's Supported Housing program, which helps clients who struggle with chronic homelessness due to mental health or substance abuse find and keep stable housing. Community Mental Health Affiliates is a private nonprofit provider of behavioral health and substance abuse treatment headquartered in New Britain.

The People's United Community Foundation awarded $75,500 during its third grant cycle of 2014 to nonprofit organizations throughout Hartford County. Thirteen organizations received funding in support of activities that ranged from education programs and basic needs services to workforce development programs and affordable housing initiatives. Recipients included Billings Forge Community Works, Capital Workforce Partners, Connecticut Institute for the Blind, Northside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance, Operation Fuel, and Manchester Area Conference of Churches, among others.

Price Chopper Supermarkets and Produce For Kids,  partners in the 12th annual “Get Healthy, Give Hope” campaign, raised $9,405 for area Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

The campaign, which ran in Price Chopper supermarkets from mid-June through July, encouraged shoppers to make smart healthy food choices. When shoppers purchased fresh fruits and vegetables from participating companies, a donation was earmarked for local Children's Miracle Network Hospitals throughout Price Chopper's six-state footprint.

The Connecticut Science Center and the new Brass City Charter School in Waterbury have partnered to develop a science curriculum and implement teacher training designed to prepare teachers for challenging new curriculum standards. Thanks to a three year grant from The Leever Foundation, the program will substantially increase science instruction time and establish a culture of science education and inquiry-based learning at the school. The goal is to create an immersive science curriculum that will be a model for other schools in Waterbury and beyond.

The federal Health Resources and Services Administration announced $500,000 in Affordable Care Act funding to support two health centers in Connecticut establish or expand behavioral health services for 520 Connecticut residents. Health centers will use these funds to hire new mental health professionals, add mental health and substance use disorder health services, and employ integrated models of primary care.
