Barbara A. Shaw, left, and Janet Bermudez. Shaw is retiring as executive director of Hands On Hartford next year and will be replaced by Bermudez, who already works for the organization.

Hands On Hartford, a Hartford nonprofit founded in 1969, recently announced that its longtime executive director plans to retire next year.

Barbara A. Shaw, who has served as executive director since 2011 after joining the organization in 2002, will step down in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to the announcement.

Shaw will be replaced by Janet Bermudez, the organization’s director of continuous quality improvement, staff development and support.

Hands On Hartford works to increase food security, promotes nutrition and health, and provides homelessness and housing support in Hartford.

During Shaw’s time with the group, Hands On Hartford moved into its first consolidated and agency-owned center for community; expanded its supportive housing and homeless prevention programs; and increased the reach and quality of its pantry, according to the nonprofit.

Hands On Hartford reported 53 employees, $4.8 million in revenue and a $407,489 loss in 2022, according to its most recently available 990 financial report.
