Hartford Courant to abandon its longtime Broad St. HQ

The Hartford Courant will shut down its offices at 285 Broad Street in Hartford as of Dec. 27, the newspaper announced today. The paper will stay in business but all employees will work remotely.

Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Andrew Julien said the newspaper, owned by the Tribune Company, made the decision due to the pandemic and economic concerns.
 
“This is a decision about real estate needs amid a difficult and challenging time on both the public health and economic fronts,” Julien said.
 
Due to pandemic concerns, Julien said that the paper’s management did not anticipate having employees returning to the newsroom and other Hartford Courant offices for the remainder of the year and into 2021.

“As we progress through the pandemic and as needs change, we will reconsider our need for physical offices,” Julien said in a statement. “We will keep employees informed of decisions as they are made.”

The move comes on the heels of the announcement in October that the Courant would shut down its Hartford printing operation and "outsource" its printing to the Springfield Republican in Massachusetts. 

A total of 151 employees were expected to be laid off at the printing plant, also located at 285 Broad St., when the move was completed by the end of the year.
