Thanks to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s going to take longer than initially expected for Hartford HealthCare to renovate downtown Hartford’s 100 Pearl St. and move 700 employees to the heart of the city’s central business district, but things are still moving forward.
On Monday, HHC opened a patient care access center in the 18-story, blue-glassed tower, spokesperson Rebecca Stewart confirmed.
She said there would be 250 workers in the tower by early 2021, but could not provide a timeline for when there would be 700.
The health system is still leasing 80,000 square feet of space in the building, as originally announced in mid-March, right as COVID-19 was hitting Connecticut.
Hartford Business Journal was first to report the news of the lease, back in January.
Though plans for a ground-floor venture studio, meant to showcase health startups working with advisors, have been postponed indefinitely, many components of the original plan remain.
That includes an exterior renovation featuring a two-story glass cube at the corner of Pearl and Trumbull streets, an idea borrowed from Apple’s Fifth Avenue office in New York City.
Stewart said the renovation work is expected to take longer than initially expected, and couldn’t yet provide a date for when it would be complete.
HHC CEO Jeff Flaks said during a May webinar hosted by HBJ that HHC had not pulled back on its commitments at Pearl Street, but that he and his team were “evaluating everything as we go forward.”
The health system will be moving a number of departments and units to the building over the remainder of this year, including its legal department, media and marketing teams and chief investment office.
Also moving to 100 Pearl will be HHC’s Newington care logistics center, which opened in 2017 and coordinates hospital-to-hospital patient transfers.
Similarly, the patient access center aims to make more efficient use of HHC’s array of providers and facilities when scheduling patient visits and procedures.
