Beth Shluger, the founder and longtime leader of the Hartford Marathon Foundation — the nonprofit organization that puts on the annual Hartford Marathon and other racing events throughout the year — is retiring, the organization announced.

Shluger will step down as CEO at the end of this year. She will be replaced by Josh Miller, who currently serves as Hartford Marathon Foundation vice president and race director.  Miller will assume the role of president on Jan. 1.

Shluger founded the foundation in 1994 to create the Eversource Hartford marathon and half marathon. The nonprofit also annually produces 25 to 30 race events across Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Next year will be the 30th running of the flagship marathon event scheduled for Oct. 14, 2023.
