Hartford to auction 58 properties delinquent on taxes

Photo | LoopNet.com The owner of 210 George St. in Hartford owes $854,243 in property taxes.

Seeking to recoup $5.5 million from delinquent property taxpayers, Hartford will auction off 58 properties in May, according to Tax Collector Nancy Raich.

The delinquent list, which is now published on CTTaxSales.com, includes a mix of property types, but commercial and industrial parcels are among the largest debtors.

It’s the second year in a row the city will hold a tax deed sale. Last year’s sale was the first in five years. The sale is separate from the city's assignment of tax liens to third party buyers.

The auction comes as Hartford continues to face financial challenges despite getting a long-term debt bailout from the state.

Hartford’s $4.08 billion grand list of taxable property as of Oct. 1, 2019, grew slightly over the past year, but fell shy of a growth target the city has set in order to keep its finances balanced.

One property that isn’t on the auction list this year is the Hartford Club, a longtime private club at 46 Prospect St. that paid off nearly $331,000 in back taxes this month in order to remove its name from the tax deed sale.

According to the tax collector, these 10 properties have the largest delinquent balances that are slated for auction, which will be held May 16 at the Hartford Public Library’s main branch:

  • 226 Prospect Ave. is a commercial development lot adjacent to McDonald’s at the corner of Prospect Avenue and Kane Street. The owner owes $990,956 to the city for Grand List years 2009-2018.
  • 210 George St. is an approximately 52,000-square-foot former skilled nursing facility in the city’s South End whose owner owes $854,243.
  • 618 Capitol Ave. is the longtime home of Capitol Archives & Record Storage, which the state had been eying for demolition in order to make way for an overhaul of I-84 in Hartford. The owner owes $396,283 for Grand List years 2010-2018.
  • 1014 Wethersfield Ave. was the original home of the Standard Structural Steel Co., which left Hartford around 1960. The industrial property’s owner owes $283,756 for Grand List years 2012-2018.
  • 73 Homestead Ave., located in the city’s Asylum Hill neighborhood, is the former home of Lebon Press, which shuttered in 2013. The owner owes the city $266,884 for Grand List years 2008-2018.
  • 92 Walnut St. formerly housed Club Charisma. The now vacant  now boarded up and vacant Clay Arsenal property has a tax balance of $264,090.
  • 96 Webster St., a mixed-used building in Barry Square, owes $241,913 for Grand List years 2009-2018.
  • 169 Bartholomew Ave. is a partially vacant industrial property whose owner owes $184,412.
  • 1400 Main St., which is mainly vacant land, owes $174,766 for Grand List years 2012-2018.
  • 49 Grand St., a former social hall, owes $162,785 for Grand List years 2009-2018.
