First Night Hartford, the city’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration in Bushnell Park featuring fireworks, music and food, has a new attraction this year: one of the largest countdown displays in the country.
The centerpiece of First Night Hartford will be a “magic mural” New Year’s countdown clock that will be projected onto the Frontier building at 111 Trumbull (across from Bushnell Park).
The 40,000-square-foot digital display also includes laser shows beginning at sundown. The first of two fireworks displays is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
The laser show will continue throughout the night, culminating with a fireworks finale as the countdown clock hits midnight.
First Night Hartford partnered with the organization RiseUP for Arts for the magic mural initiative.
"We're thrilled to partner with First Night Hartford to create an unforgettable experience for our community," said Matt Conway, executive director of The RiseUP Group Inc. "This activation highlights the Magic Mural Art Wall’s unique ability to merge art, technology, and celebration, making Hartford a destination for the New Year."
In a pilot project in November, the Frontier building displayed artwork by local students and international creators.
First Night Hartford begins at Bushnell Park, 1 Jewell St., at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15.
The event will feature DJ Kasy Cortez at 4:30 p.m. and Tang Sauce at 5:30 p.m. at the park’s main stage.
Nelson Bello & Friends will perform at 11 p.m.
Food trucks and vendors will be on hand until midnight, and the park’s carousel will be in operation from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Winterfest ice skating rink in Bushnell Park will be open from noon to 9 p.m.
There’s also live music at ONE Bar on Union Place, with the Brandon Serafino Duo performing from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Also, DJ Sonia Sol will play at Trumbull Kitchen from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
There will be karaoke at Sunberry restaurant on Pratt Street from 9 p.m. to midnight.
There are other family-friendly events and activities at the Sea Tea Comedy Theater on Asylum Street, the Old State House on Main Street, TheaterWorks Hartford on Pearl Street, Center Church on Gold Street, City Place I on Asylum Street and at the Hartford Public Library on Main Street.
