Business leaders and UConn fans will gather for a victory parade in downtown Hartford this weekend celebrating the women’s basketball team’s NCAA National Championship.
On Sunday afternoon, the Huskies trampled the South Carolina Gamecocks 82-59 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.
It was the UConn team’s first NCAA championship since 2016 and 12th overall under Head Coach Geno Auriemma.
The parade will step off from the State Capitol at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the intersection of Trinity Street and Elm Street.
From there, it will proceed north on Trinity Street, go through the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, turn right (east) onto Jewell Street, turn left (north) onto Trumbull Street, and end at the intersection of Asylum and Trumbull streets outside the XL Center.
As the parade finishes the route, a rally will start at about 11:30 a.m. outside the Trumbull Street entrance to the XL Center, the Huskies’ home arena.
Players, coaches and other dignitaries will give speeches.
Gov. Ned Lamont announced the parade Tuesday morning and urged the public to attend.
“The UConn women’s basketball team has proven that they are the best in the nation, and now it’s time for Connecticut to give them the victory celebration they have earned,” Lamont said.
The parade and rally are funded by private donations through sponsorship opportunities. No state or city funding is used.
To sponsor the event, businesses may choose from several sponsorship levels up to $10,000.
Anyone interested in sponsorship opportunities may contact Chip McCabe at the Hartford Business Improvement District at 860-770-0788 or cmccabe@hartfordbid.com.
