The University of New Haven on Monday announced a new affiliation with Bristol Hospital which provides a 20% tuition discount to hospital employees.
Eligible workers may participate in undergraduate, graduate and non-credit professional-development certificate programs at the West Haven-based university.
They may pursue programs at UNH such as master’s degrees in public health, healthcare administration or speech-language pathology; graduate certificates in epidemiology, healthcare informatics or long-term health; or bachelor’s degrees in health sciences, exercise sciences or medical laboratory science.
UNH advisers will provide guidance to participating employees. Representatives from UNH will interact with hospital employees via on-site visits, benefit fairs and lunch-and-learn events, according to the announcement.
Both UNH and hospital officials noted there is an ongoing need for healthcare workers.
Elizabeth B. Francis-Connolly, dean of UNH’s School of Health Sciences, called the new collaboration a “win-win” for both the university and hospital.
“Building these relationships is critical to increasing the health care workforce in Connecticut,” Francis-Connolly said.
Dr. Michele Normandin, a physician specializing in pathology at Bristol Hospital, noted the medical technology area of medicine is particularly understaffed. Medical technologists are involved in laboratory work done at hospitals.
“Many positions are available now, and the demand for medical technologists will only continue to increase,” Normandin said.
