Hospital for Special Care gets $250K grant for COPD program

The Gawlicki Family Foundation of Hartford is awarding Hospital for Special Care (HSC) a $250,000 grant to expand its Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) program, the New Britain hospital announced today.

The grant will be used to increase program services, including adding psychology, social work and nutritional counseling; increase the number of COPD patients served by 25 percent each year for the next three years; and to obtain national certification for the program. HSC is actively managing 67 COPD patients and has enrolled 144 since the program began in 2013.

COPD is a progressive disease characterized by frequent worsening of respiratory symptoms leading to further reduced lung function and increased shortness of breath. It afflicts 15 million Americans and is the third leading cause of death, according to HSC.

The grant will help HSC to better assist patients increase functional abilities, decrease shortness of breath, better understand respiratory processes and learn relapse prevention techniques, HSC said.
