Hospitals to testify against tax increase

Connecticut hospital executives will try to convince the legislature’s Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee today not to implement Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s proposed budget.

The Connecticut Hospital Association says the proposed budget would expand the state’s hospital tax to more than $514 million per year — up from $350 million — and cut Medicaid reimbursement rates.

It would also eliminate for the next two fiscal years a $15 million-per-year low-cost hospital pool shared by a dozen of the state’s providers.

The budget would also limit hospitals’ use of tax credits, CHA noted. It will make these points during a Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee hearing that started at 11 a.m. in the Legislative Office Building.

“CHA will testify that cuts and taxes are eroding hospitals,” the association said in a statement preceding the hearing today. “Hospitals have already been cut and taxed so significantly that it is hurting patient care, access, jobs, and our economy, and the proposed budget would add even more financial pressure at a time when hospitals need adequate funding to provide the best care.”
