Former Connecticut Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard A. Robinson, who recently retired from his role overseeing the state’s Judicial Branch and presiding over its highest court, has joined law firm Day Pitney, according to an announcement Monday.

Robinson’s last day as chief justice was Sept. 6. As of Monday, he became a partner in Day Pitney’s litigation department and a member of its appellate practice group.

Day Pitney is one of the largest firms in the region and has a large presence in downtown Hartford. Robinson is based in the firm's Hartford office in Goodwin Square.

Robinson became the state’s first Black chief justice after five years as an associate justice on the state’s high court. He worked for the state judiciary for 24 years.

In the announcement, Day Pitney said he “earned widespread respect for his leadership, integrity and dedication to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion within the judicial system.”

The firm described him as “humble yet assertive, confident without ego, intellectually curious, and respected by all.”

Robinson made leading an equitable and inclusive court system a priority during his career.

“His distinguished career, both on the bench and advocating for diversity, equity and inclusion, aligns perfectly with our firm’s values,” said Gregory A. Hayes, managing partner at Day Pitney. “His wisdom, leadership and experience will be an incredible asset to our firm and clients.”

Robinson is also known for his musical taste, which ranges from Beethoven to Jimi Hendrix. His cultural interests vary from Tolkien to the musical "Hamilton,” according to an interview with Kevin Rennie in 2023.

He is fluent in Middle English and has a fourth-degree black belt in karate.

Day Pitney also employs former Chief Justice Chase T. Rogers, who is chair of the firm's appellate practice group.

Day Pitney has more than 300 attorneys in 13 offices in Boston, Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Providence, Rhode Island, and Washington, D.C.
