Guilford-based Hyperfine unveiled an upgrade of its portable MRI device at a conference this week that cuts the time needed for brain imaging to three minutes, the company announced Thursday. The enhanced scan also emits no ionizing radiation, according to Hyperfine.
Using new software, Hyperfine’s Swoop portable MRI system can perform the shorter tests, which are ideal for young patients with hydrocephalus, or the abnormal buildup of fluids in the cavities of the brain. Those patients may have difficulty sitting still for long tests without sedation and may have been exposed to high levels of radiation from CT and other scans.
The FDA recently cleared Hypefine’s upgrade, which includes a T1 Standard sequence optimized for imaging the inside of the brain and a Fast T2 sequence that provides images that can aid in the assessment of brain ventricles, according to a Hyperfine statement.
Hyperfine Chief Medical Officer Dr. Khan Siddiqui said, “[Swoop’s new software] allows young patients to be imaged sooner, avoid harmful ionizing radiation, stay close to their caregivers, and eliminates the intimidating experience of transport and lengthy wait times often associated with traditional MR imaging.”
Hyperfine debuted Swoop’s new capabilities at a national conference on hydrocephalus in Texas. Hyperfine has partnered with the Hydrocephalus Association on the disease, which results in more than 40,000 hospital admissions a year.
Hyperfine announced earlier this month that President and CEO Dave Scott would resign as of July 29 for personal reasons.
Founded by biotech entrepreneur Jonathan Rothberg, Hyperfine has expanded sales of Swoop globally in recent months, moving into markets in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and Pakistan.
