Tech giant IBM confirmed Thursday that it plans to close its massive Southbury office as of Jan. 26, and transfer workers to New York, as part of a broader office space consolidation.
Christopher Mumma, an IBM spokesman, said there will not be any jobs eliminated as a result of the closure. IBM has nearby facilities in Poughkeepsie and Armonk, New York, and the Southbury employees may be relocated to one of those offices, or be allowed to telecommute, depending on their roles.
It was not immediately clear how many employees report to the 1.1 million-square-foot Southbury office, at 150 Kettletown Road, which IBM has owned for decades.
It was built in 1987 and is appraised at $70.8 million, according to the town assessor’s office.
"IBM regularly assesses physical office spaces around the world so that our employees can do their best work in service to our clients,” the company said, in an emailed statement to the Hartford Business Journal. “As our business continues to evolve, changes to our global real estate footprint will support our company’s intentionally flexible work environment.”
