The new owner of UConn’s former West Hartford campus, Ideanomics, has unveiled a more detailed look at its vision for a massive development called Fintech Village.
With remediation of polychlorinated biphenyls now underway, and asbestos cleanup slated to begin this week, Ideanomics on Monday released a virtual fly-through of its proposed development.

Fintech Village’s development cost has grown to “$400 million plus,” up from Ideanomics’ previous estimate of $283 million. Part of that has to do with Ideanomics’ intent to demolish more several more buildings on the 58-acre campus than it had originally planned.

The video, created by New Haven-based Newman Architects, shows an art gallery, a wetlands park walkway, community center, civic plaza, and of course, space for Ideanomics itself.

The narration promises a design that incorporates public access to the property. The ground floors of a number of the buildings will be open to the public and contain shops and eateries.

“Fintech village will be a unique and special place the likes of which Connecticut has not seen, adapted to fit organically into the scale and footprint of the former UConn campus…,” the video says.

The state has pledged $10 million to the development in exchange for the 330 jobs Ideanomics promised to create. Last month, state officials and Ideanomics resolved a disagreement over the plan for environmental cleanup.

The asbestos cleanup that begins this week is expected to take three months.

On Monday, Ideanomics said its next steps are to seek local approval to create a “Technology Village District” zone, and then to submit permit applications to the town to build the development.

“This innovation hub will be a center of excellence and collaboration for cutting-edge solutions with applications in artificial intelligence, robotics, clean tech, med tech, accounting, insurance, financial services, transportation and more,” Ideanomics Chairman Bruno Wu said in a statement.
