Swedish furniture retailer Ikea said it hopes to have a 250-kilowatt fuel cell up and running at its New Haven store by this fall.
It would be the company’s first fuel cell on the East Coast. It has installed or announced plans to install fuel cells at five California stores. The installation at the 311,000-square-foot store, pending permit approvals, would bring the retailer’s portfolio of fuel cells to more than 1.5 megawatts.
Bloom Energy is supplying the solid-oxide fuel cell.
Combined with a 941-kilowatt rooftop solar array installed at the New Haven Ikea in 2012, the fuel cell is expected to provide the majority of the store’s electricity needs.
The fuel cell will generate an estimated 2.1 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year, enough to power 163 homes for a year.
